Mother’s Ruin operate out of Walthamstow producing delicious Gins and Liqueurs. They have an obsessive focus on ingredients and all of the fruits used are hand foraged from the same trees year on year, bringing consistency and character that can’t be forged. After our recent visit to Mother’s Ruin Gin Palace to see just how these products are distilled and produced, we’ve decided to list these products individually.  We can’t choose a favourite, so purchase all four and we’ll throw in some complimentary artisan tonics!

Damson Gin (20% ABV) This is fantastic; a true gem. Rich sweetness reminiscent of port is complemented by a subtle almond note. An overwhelmingly juicy profile with a hint of tartness, typical of this wonderful fruit. The Damsons used come from a small set of trees on the slopes of the Lyth Valley in Cumbria. Serve over ice, with tonic, use as an ingredient in cocktails or why not drizzle over our Cheesecake for a delicious finishing touch.  Siobhan from Mother’s Ruin recommends to try a dash in a glass of fizz, or shake with bourbon and lemon for a delicious Whiskey Sour.

Old Tom Gin (40%) A Gold Star Great Taste Award winner and named after the sign of a black cat which hung over 18th century illicit gin palaces is making a modern come back with it’s strong flavour profiles. It’s slightly sweeter and more richly flavoured gin by comparison to the London Dry gins we have all come to love, and is distilled in a tiny copper still named ‘Naomi’, which is then rested for a few weeks to let the flavours merge and balance. Aromatic, with a beautiful balance of both spice and herb including sweet orange peel, vanilla pods, bay, nutmeg and coriander seeds are layered over a base of juniper and orris root.

Rhubarb Vodka (20%) Another Gold Star Great Taste Award winner, this delicately flavoured liqueur is made from the delicious varieties of Stockbridge Arrow and Victoria, grown in London. Fresh uplifting rhubarb notes are warmed and balanced by the spice of fresh ginger root, delicious on its own or in a cocktail.

Bitter Orange Rum (20%) Receiving two Gold Star Great Taste awards, this beautifully balanced drink has long lasing bittersweet citrus notes with hints of burnt caramel.  Seville oranges, sweet oranges and dark rum combine to make this tawny marmalade flavoured liqueur, it’s particularly fine in a Mother’s Negroni along with campari, gin, orange zest and a dash of orange spice bitters.
