English reds can be a little lacklustre but this little belter, made with Kentish Rondo, Pinot Noir and Pinot Noir Précoce by the ever-reliable Chapel Down winery in Kent, is a splendid exception. Full and serious, the nose has plums, brambles, floral notes and hints of cherry and liquorice. Smooth tannins, plenty of fruit and a touch of spiciness on the finish. Can handle rich meats like roast suckling pig with ease.
